  • Nathan Weinberg at Inside Google is claiming that YouTubeYouTubeYouTube has moved ahead of Google VideoGoogle VideoGoogle Video in terms of popularity. I totally agree. But it’s not just GoogleGoogleGoogle – these guys have moved ahead of everybody! This week, I caught a roundup of the “Flickrs of video” – here’s the list:

    -Clipshack

    -VSocial

    -Grouper

    -GoogleVideo

    -Metacafe

    -Castpost

    -VimeoVimeoVimeo

    -Revver

    -OurMedia

YouTube is way ahead of many of these services – YouTube videos are appearing on blogs and websites all over the place. OurMedia is also excellent, but it’s a non-profit and I’m more interested in startups right now. I’m also a fan of Grouper – it’s definitely one to watch.

Now correct me if I’m wrong, but the only video sharing service with a clear business model right now is Revver – they’re putting ads in videos and splitting the revenue with the content creator. Even this seems like a difficult thing to pull off – can they earn enough from the ads to pay for their bandwidth and reward the content creators? I’m not sure – but I’m keen to find out.

UPDATE (October 9th 2006): Google has bought YouTube. See this post for the announcement and this one for the rumors. Also check out the YouTube category for the whole story and all the latest YouTube news. To subscribe to YouTube news, select “YouTube only” from the menu at the top right of the sidebar and enter your email address.

  • You should definitely check out vSocial (http://www.vsocial.com). Part of what makes it standout, beyond making video clip sharing just work, is providing web based tools that enable users to actually “do somethingâ€ with video.

So, for example, in the vSocial scheme of things, if you embed a clip on your blog, you will see a meta layer that enables you to see how this clip was tagged by vSocial members, see what comments were made about it by them, and email the clip to friends in a click — all without going to another site.

Plus we provide a tool called a video roll that enables users to tell short stories (e.g., favorite horror movies) using an amalgam of clips. In addition, user badges are flash based widgets that adorn community pages with dynamic profile info like favorite, newest or most popular uploaded videos.

Again, all browser based, and you can even create full posts on clips to Blogger and TypePad using our WYSIWYG Blog It! editor. Plus, you can integrate videos into iTunes in a single click.

To get a quickie primer on this and see-touch-feel what I am talking about, check out the post that we wrote on the topic called "Short attention, short conversations and video clips" .

It has a couple examples embedded in the post.

Better yet, check out the site yourself, and in five minutes, it should be clear that we’ve nailed it from a usability, utility and workflow perspective.

The site is growing like a weed.

  • Ok,

I am about to go nuts here! I am trying to embed a youtube video into my website. I copied the code and pasted it where it needs to be. So I go to test and the youtube screen comes up. Everything is going to according to plan. Then I press play to see if it plays. It doesn’t. Actually, everytime I press play, the replay screen comes up. What on Earth am I doing wrong. It doesnt even play the videos relating to it. Someone please help! This would be a great addition to my site. I am using Microsoft Frontpage as my video editor. I hate coming so close and falling short!

  • I haven't even tried to download it (don't know where it's done). My daughter told me to go to Google, and there would probably be directions for downloading. Haven't found them and after reading the comment from someone who seems to know what she's doing I guess I'll give up, and just miss all the stuff I've been getting requiring YouTube.

    Video Podcasting and Mashups
I use Grouper mainly because of its video podcasting features and video downloading features. As far as I can tell it is the only video sharing website that allows you to do both. All the clips I'm sharing are automatically added to my video podcasting channel and my friends just subscribe to it to get my clips into their iPod video Player. http://grouper.com/about/what.aspx?i=ipod

Also, both Grouper and YouTube offer an API to build video mashups that I'm currently playing with:

Hey! YouTube always put foward an image of a fresh friendly organisation. I spent many hours building-up a list of favourites on YouTube which I enjoyed. Never joined because I don't have the equipment to post. Today I went to look at my favourites and instead of my list which took hours and hours to build, I get a join-up screen. They just deleted my favourites. I tried joining but that didn't get my list back. No warning, no niceness just mean vicious bureaucracy at work. Down with youTube!

Your site should also link back to other sites so that they
do it for yours. The only way to stack up online competition is tower in search results optimizing your website the right
way. Having the right rap beat making software within your production
toolkit could be the difference between having tracks that make the girls wanna shake their rumps all night long, or getting the CD with your beats on it thrown out of a
moving car window before the intro is over.
